Stay – Review of The Purist Villas in Ubud Bali

The pool in Bamboo Villa 2

Last updated: August 18, 2023

The Purist Villas is a small boutique resort for couples, families, and solo travelers located in Ubud, Bali. There are 17 villas to choose from that can accommodate 1-4 people. There is also a full service restaurant and bar on site where you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks if you don’t want to leave the property. If you want to go to Ubud town, they offer a free shuttle a few times per day, you can borrow bikes or walk the 1.5 kms. As for leisure and tours, the property has a spa with an outdoor yoga studio, two common pools, a tour desk to help arrange activities, and complimentary passes to a fitness centre 10 minutes away.

Our Room – Bamboo Villa

We stayed in a Bamboo Villa that was 140 sq metres, had a large king four poster bed, and a small sofa bed that would be suitable for another person. The room was divided into 2; the living area with the bedroom and then the bathroom and closet area.

We took so many photos of the bathroom because we loved the design that combined an industrial concrete look with some Balinese accents, including the Balinese terracotta tiles in the bathtub. The bathtub area feels like a spa due to how quiet it is and I enjoyed taking a bath with the candles lit and using the bath salts provided. Since the back wall of the room is against the path that connects the other rooms, there are not a lot of windows which makes this part of the room a little dark but the shower has a skylight which lets in the natural light.

The design is modern, with touches of Balinese art and they try to use a lot of natural products in the room.  We really enjoyed their natural toiletries, other than the moisturizer because it was chocolate scented and it seemed out of place.

The outdoor area also offered ample space to relax and soak up the sun. Since the room was equipped with 2 yoga mats, I did yoga daily on the lower balcony. The pool was also very large and so it was possible to swim laps. We also appreciated the covered area by the pool in case of rain since we were visiting during rainy season but it never rained.

The Restaurant – Café Balisimo

The onsite restaurant Café Balisimo is a full-service restaurant open most of the day in an open air environment with covered and uncovered seating. They offer up Indonesian fare as well as western fare and have daily 3 course meals specials.

Our rate included breakfast and afternoon time, and we had dinner one evening.  Overall, we were very impressed with the quality and the freshness of everything we had at Café Balisimo. We also found the price of dinner to be reasonable for the atmosphere and that you were on the resort property. Some of the best breakfasts we have had at hotels have been in Bali, and The Purist is no exception, and their fresh fruit bowls might be our favorites.

Access to Ubud:

This was our 5th visit to Ubud and the 6th hotel we’ve stayed at in the area. We chose The Purist for a number of reasons but the deal breaker for us was its proximity to Ubud down. Since we’ve been to Bali a few times, we were not looking for a home base to go on tours as much as we were looking for a place where we could relax but also go to town easily a couple of times per day. Ubud has a great food and coffee scene and so we like to go and try new places and familiar favorites.

Compared to other villas, The Purist was the nicest, within our budget, and we could either take a shuttle into Ubud which took 5 minutes, or walk about 30 minutes. In some cases, we took the shuttle into town and walked back. It is not the easiest to walk to town due to the lack of sidewalks but it is doable and you get to catch a glimpse of village and temple life, which we really enjoyed.

During our stay, the shuttle schedule into Ubud was:

  • 10:00
  • 12:00
  • 15:00
  • 17:00
  • 19:00
  • 22:00

**the return journey was 15 minutes after the departure time, i.e 10:15, 12:15, etc.

As much as we also wanted to bike into the town, the bikes offered by The Purist are men’s mountain bikes and the seats are too high for my short 5”3 body.

Summary:

Our 3 night stay in Ubud at The Purists was exactly what we needed after a hectic itinerary with short stops in the UAE, the Maldives, and Qatar. It is hard to explain but I feel so good in the jungle, there’s something about the colors, the sounds, the air, the warm weather, and the energy that helps me to feel rejuvenated. It was really hot when we walked during the day and it felt so refreshing to jump into the pool, which was larger than the pools at any of the other villas we stayed at.

Everything was spectacular during our stay at The Purist and the Bamboo Villa was a great choice for us and we’d love to come back one day.
