It was love at first stay when we found Lone Star Court, a boutique hotel by the Valencia Group located in Austin’s Domain Shopping neighborhood. If you would like to love camping, but don’t want to sleep in a tent, Lone Star Court is the place for you; it’s a luxury retro hotel with a motel/trailer park theme.

Despite its location in a busier and generic shopping mall complex, Lone Star Court has character and offers privacy and a relaxing setting. The ample outdoor space is framed by the buildings that house the rooms to create a summer camp style atmosphere with fire pits, a pool, picnic tables, corn toss game, and live music on weekends.

There are 123 rooms: 80 kings, 40 doubles and 3 suits which provides good options for families, couples, and other groups. Compared to standard hotel rooms, the rooms are larger and have fun features like a turquoise Smeg fridge as the mini-bar, a cowhide desk chair, retro light fixtures, and a rocking chair with a table with a view of the courtyard just outside the room entrance.

They also invest in high-end toiletries made by Bliss and have their signature Valencia bed with Egyptian cotton linens for maximum comfort and luxury. The only negative is that the soundproofing could be slightly better as you can hear the carts being pushed by staff outside and some noise from the other rooms.  We have always stayed in a king room and prefer the top floor because it’s the most private and quiet.

The Water Trough is the restaurant/bar onsite and has a happy hour and live music too on certain days. Up until recently, the hotel offered a free breakfast buffet with scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, fruit, yogurt, cereal, sausage, but has since stopped that and only the continental breakfast is free (toast, oatmeal, fruit, pastry). For those wanting a more substantial breakfast, they have a menu with about 10 different items starting at about $10.

They are very relaxed about BYOB (bring Your Own Beer) and BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) here which is great since we like to bring takeout back to eat at the picnic tables with our own canned beer.

If you want to make s’mores, the hotel sells kits at the front desk. The property is also pet-friendly and families, couples, and solo travelers would enjoy staying here.

We wish more hotels imitated the Lone Star Court concept because it’s such a fun and special place where you can enjoy the outdoors and relax. Just 20 minutes’ drive to downtown, you may have trouble leaving the comfort of your rocking chair for too long and you may actually start to enjoy country music.
